Asbestos
Asbestos was used in building materials until the mid 1980s. As long as it remains undamaged and does not deteriorate, it is safe. Asbestos is potentially dangerous if asbestos fibres are released when materials containing asbestos are damaged or disturbed.
We have procedures for managing asbestos in our properties, which includes a register of dwellings where asbestos has been found or is believed to exist. The register is continually updated by surveying buildings so that we can decide the safest way to deal with it.
All Trust tenants will be advised when they sign for their tenants if there is any asbestos in the property, including the type, location and necessary precautions.
If asbestos is present in your property, please note the following instructions:
- Do not use abrasives of any kind on asbestos materials
- Do not use hand or power drills or other tools on asbestos materials
- Do not use sandpaper to “key” asbestos surfaces fro painting or decorating
