How do I End My Tenancy?
When you have decided to give up your tenancy you should write to your Estate Services Officer at least 4 weeks before you leave, confirming that you are ending your tenancy. Your letter should include a forwarding address and the four weeks notice should end on a Monday. If it is easier for you then please visit our office and ask our staff to write the notice for you.
You must inform other organisations that you are leaving your home, e.g. your gas supplier, your electricity company, the water company, telephone company the council tax department and the housing benefit department. You will need to arrange for your meters to be read so that you are not charged for services used by whoever moves in after you. You also need to arrange for your post to be redirected.
On the day your notice expires or before, you should return the keys to the office before 12 noon. If you live in an Elderly Retirement Scheme you can give the keys to the Scheme Manager. It is important that you make sure you have given the right notice and hand all of the keys in on time to avoid paying extra rent when you end your tenancy.
When you leave the property you must:
- Leave it completely empty and clean.
- Leave it in a reasonable decorative order.
- Repair any damage you have caused and replace anything missing.
- Remove carpets.
- Remove all rubbish and belongings including clearing attics and sheds.
- Leave your garden in a tidy condition, clear any rubbish or furniture and cut the grass.
- Leave no one in the property as they will be classed as illegal occupiers.
If you have not done all of the above, we will charge you for the full cost of carrying out any work that is not the Trust’s responsibility. A 10% administration fee to cover the cost of organising the work will also be charged to you.
If you are transferring to another property owned by The Trust, another Housing Association or a Local Authority we may accept less than four weeks notice.
