Audit Commission

The Housing Inspectorate is part of the Audit Commission, which looks at many public sector services including local government and housing and has links with other national inspectorates. The Housing Inspectorate aims to recognise good performance and promote excellence, as well as to identify weakness and improve the services poor performers provide. Above all, their role is to help housing organisations to provide high-quality services, within their available resources, in response to the aspirations of their service users and their wider communities.

In due course, under new powers in the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008, the TSA will commission inspections from the Audit Commission to assess the quality of housing services delivered by registered providers, by reference to the standards set under TSA's new regulatory framework. Commissioning arrangements will be developed during 2009 and in the meantime, the TSA and the Audit Commission will work closely together to decide which housing associations are selected for inspection, and whether 'full service' or short notice inspection is most appropriate.
